Choosing the Right Size Foundation for your Bed & Mattress

Choosing the Right Size Foundation for your Mattress

Does your bed sit uncomfortably too high or too low? If this is a problem you’re experiencing, you may have the wrong size foundation under your mattress!

What Size Foundation is Right for You?

We get so many questions from customers asking what the right foundation size is for their new bed or mattress, and the answer is - it depends! A lot of it depends on your personal preference and needs. Things to Consider

Start by considering the following before reviewing your options:

  • How high do I want my bed to sit?
  • How thick is my mattress?
  • Does my bed base move? (an adjustable motion foundation)
  • Do I have a platform bed or storage drawers under my bed?

1. Low-Profile Foundation & Bunkie Board

  • Low-Profile foundations are a great option that will provide awesome support & a lower overall height for your bed. These are recommended on certain bed frames that naturally sit up higher due to a higher positioning in the bed rails on the bed itself. Low-Profile foundations are usually between 4" - 6" high.
  • Bunkie Boards are most often used on bunk beds to maintain minimal height added to the mattress while still providing great support & breathability for your mattress. These can also be used to achieve a very low profile on any style bed. Bunkie boards are normally 2" high.

2. Standard Foundation

  • Standard foundations are what most individuals have owned their whole lives. They are traditionally between 9" - 11'' high. On a high profile bed frame or mattress however, a standard foundation could make your bed uncomfortably high

3. Adjustable Foundation

  • Adjustable foundations fit inside most standard sized bed frames of all styles! You can synchronize frames under the bed if you have a single mattress, or you can have a split king (2 foundations, 2 mattresses) so that you and your partner can have individualized comfort. Most adjustable foundations come with the option of adjustable legs as well, making it easy to increase or decrease overall bed height depending on your preference.
  • Adjustable foundations are a great option to help reduce snoring, acid reflux and for anyone with trouble getting in or out of bed. These foundations also provide great customized comfort and support for sleeping as well as reading in bed or watching your favorite TV show at just the right angle!

Platform and/or Storage Beds

  • Platform and/or Storage Beds are rarely recommended to need any kind of additional foundation or support. These come with a built-in platform that you can put your mattress right on. If you'd like to increase the height of your bed, we'd suggest trying out a bunkie board first.
